UAE’S First Biobank Set to Launch at DHCC

Our
Message

As we move into a promising H2 in 2022, we reflect upon our achievements over the past six months for Dubai Healthcare City Authority (DHCA) during which we signed deals with two leading medical institutions as well as onboarded various new business partners, in line with our strategic goals. Expansion will remain a focus for the remainder of the year and beyond as we look to evolving the Dubai Healthcare City ecosystem.

Our new partnerships with Asan Medical Centre and Prime Medical Centre represent further progress in DHCA’s contribution to make Dubai a global hub for quality healthcare and medical services. I firmly believe collaboration with visionary partners and driving the growth of our community with best-in-class technology and personnel can play a pivotal role in positioning the emirate comparatively amongst global destinations for healthcare and wellbeing.

We have also partnered with the Mohammed bin Rashid Establishment for Small and Medium Enterprise Development (Dubai SME), an agency of the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai (DET), to support Emirati start-ups in healthcare and allied services. Under the initiative, Emirati entrepreneurs registered with Dubai SME will receive a start-up incentive package, which includes a 20 per cent rent discount on business units within the Dubai Healthcare City freezone during the first five years of the lease contract.

This will, I am certain, will attract Emirati talent in the industry to make DHCC their home and provide the perfect stepping-stone for growth. DHCC is also dedicating 10 per cent of its procurement budget for purchases from national companies listed with Dubai SME, offering an additional boost for development and success.

With an array of new projects in the pipeline, DHCA continues working towards fulfilling its promise of building DHCC as a globally renowned health and wellness destination. I personally look forward to a fruitful H2 and you should too. Exciting times are coming.

Yours sincerely,
Jamal Abdul Salam
CEO, Dubai Healthcare City Authority

It will also store data related to these samples and other biomolecular resources.

Due to the vital role biobanks play in advancing research and medical discovery, the biobank will become an indispensable resource for healthcare facilities in the UAE to conduct research and offer effective treatment.

HIGHLIGHTS

DHCC MARKS CORD BLOOD AWARENESS MONTH

In honour of the Cord Blood Awareness Month in July, and to encourage more doners to store cord blood, DHCC brought together its business partners who operate stem cell banks as well as industry professionals to discuss the importance of cord blood and how it could be a life-saving solution for many patients. The aim is to raise awareness of the wider public on the importance of cord blood and its advantages in curing numerous diseases.

In celebration we remember one of the successful cord blood transplant procedures within DHCC. At the age of three, Ahmad was was diagnosed with thalassemia, a genetic disorder affecting blood cells that results in a significant decline in red blood cells count. This can lead to dangerous life-threatening complications including organ failure.

Ahmad’s family chose to store the stem cells obtained from cord blood of their newborn 'Al Anoud' at Smart Cells International Middle East in DHCC and, following extensive research, Ahmad’s parents were informed that the stored stem cells could be used to treat their young son.

Smart Cells International Middle East medical staff coordinated the stem cell transplant with the Emirati toddler’s specialist doctor, and Ahmad underwent a successful transplant without any complications. That was 18 years ago! Today, aged 21, Ahmad is fully recovered from thalassemia, leads a happy life and is more determined to be a living example of why every patient should never lose hope.

The breathtaking Creek and Dubai skyline views has become the new hotspot in town, with more photography hobbyists and professionals capturing some poster-like shots from our Creek promenade in DHCC Phase-2.

“Being frequent visitors of the DHCC phase 2 promenade, my family and I have always admired this breathtaking skyline,” said Huzefa Hussain, a freelance photographer. During my university years back home, I would support my father at his photography studio in my free time, and I developed a passion for visual storytelling. With this shot, we happened to be at the right place at the right time.”
