Scheduled to take place on 17 May 2012, the event will be held at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Centre. Titled ‘Advances in Evidence Based Integrated Medicine Conference’, the platform will aim to bridge the gap between conventional, complementary and alternative medicine through providing case studies on evidence based integrative medicine. The conference will additionally seek to enhance patient care and wellbeing. Chaired by Dr Andrew Weil, world-renowned leader and pioneer in integrative medicine and Director of Program in Integrative Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Arizona, the conference will host international experts in integrative, complementary and alternative medicine, as well as representatives of regulatory authorities.
Supported by the Ministry of Health, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center and Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, the CME-accredited conference will feature a panel discussion headlined by Dr Andrew Weil; Dr Shurong Jiang Mandaraki, Managing Director, Emirates Integrated Medical Center; Dr Vangelis Zafeiriou, Psychiatrist, President of HAHMC and Member of the Council of Medical Association of Athens; Dr Heather Eade, Naturopathic Medicine Practitioner, CAM Department, The Dubai Mall Medical Center; and Dr Leon Du Preez, Medical Director of The City Hospital at Dubai Healthcare City.
Dr Ayesha Abdullah, Managing Director, Dubai Healthcare City, said: “The healthcare of the future is going to be a hybrid of conventional medicine and health and wellness centers. We want to encourage a new philosophy that is based on self-reliant, life-style change, prevention and using less expensive Complimentary and Alternative therapies alongside the conventional medicine. Therefore the Integrative Medicine Conference, with the support of Chairperson of Dubai Healthcare City Authority HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, reinforces our vision to pioneer integrated healthcare in the region.”
Dr Weil said: “Patient and practitioner are partners in the healing process. Appropriate use of both conventional and alternative methods facilitates the body's innate healing response. Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive should be used whenever possible. Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically.”
In a new survey of 29 integrative medicine centers around the US, 75 percent reported success using integrative practices to treat chronic pain and more than half reported positive results for gastrointestinal conditions, chronic stress, depression and anxiety as well as cancer.
Dr Weil added: “The Integrative Medicine Conference will help increase understanding of evidence based integrative medicine, enhance patient care and offer a higher level of healthcare delivery. It will also provide conventional and CAM providers a perfect opportunity for networking.”
Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Alolama, Executive Director, Center for Healthcare Planning and Quality, said: “More and more people are turning to the power of natural healing, over the last few years we have seen a growing trend in patients choosing complementary and alternative medicine and we are proud to be championing CAM in the region.
