Dubai Healthcare City appoints new head of its education division

Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) has announced the appointment of Dr Amer Sharif as the new Managing Director of its education division responsible for leading the education projects in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center.

Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) has announced the appointment of Dr Amer Sharif as the new Managing Director of its education division responsible for leading the education projects in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center. 

Supporting DHCC’s efforts to achieve its education ambitions, the newly appointed MD will oversee development of the medical education portfolio  to promote academia in healthcare to serve Dubai, the UAE and the region. DHCC’s Academic Medical Center is home to Dubai School of Dental Medicine, a home-grown specialist dental school led by world-renowned experts; the Al Maktoum Medical Library, a state-of-the-art facility housing the region’s most advanced collection of medical education resources; and the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center, a ground-breaking state-of-the-art comprehensive clinical simulation training facility.

Commenting on the appointment, Marwan Abedin, CEO of DHCC said, “Dr Amer’s dedication to education, as well as his professional experience, will prove an invaluable addition to the growth of DHCC as we seek to achieve our education aspirations. We recently announced that education is at the forefront of our plans for 2013 and the appointment of Dr Amer is a major step in increasing our expertise and understanding of the needs of our nation.

We are investing heavily in our education offering with the aim of establishing world-class medical education and research programmes within the Emirate and ultimately aim to create a sustainable quality healthcare workforce, allowing UAE residents to be best treated closer to home. By establishing a leadership team with this level of experience with global educational bodies, we can ensure our medical professionals and students will benefit from the very best the world has to offer.”

Dr Amer has previously held several senior roles within the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and has also played an important role in leading several projects within DHA, mainly focused on workforce development and medical education.

In addition to his extensive professional career, Dr Amer is a respected academic who is currently completing a PhD in Public Health at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), UAE University (UAEU). His work has also been published in international journals and presented at several conferences.

Dr Amer obtained his Medical degree at CMHS, UAEU in 2003 and earned his Master of Science (MSc) in Healthcare Management at Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI) in 2007. Dr Amer was recognized with the Best Employee Award by the DHA and received the prestigious Sheikh Rashid Award for Excellence for Distinguished Students, for being the gold medalist at the CMHS, UAEU.
