Educational activities draw attention to World Asthma Day

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 6 May 2013 – Today marks World Asthma Day and ISIS The French Clinic, located in Dubai Healthcare City, are celebrating the occasion by hosting a free family education event to raise awareness of the chronic disease.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 6 May 2013 – Today marks World Asthma Day and ISIS The French Clinic, located in Dubai Healthcare City, are celebrating the occasion by hosting a free family education event to raise awareness of the chronic disease.

Globally, asthma affects around 300 million individuals, with children most at risk due to the smaller size of their lungs. As many as one in 8 children in the UAE have asthma, and its prevalence is increasing. Today’s educational event, hosted by ISIS will provide parents and children with free information to help them understand asthma and educate them on how to reduce the likelihood of an attack. The staff at the clinic will provide essential information on causes, triggers, treatments and much more.

Dr. Nawar Tayara Sayed, Specialist Pediatric Pulmonologist, ISIS The French Clinic said “Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disorder which leads to many hospitalisations in under 15s and increased school absenteeism. If not managed properly, it can be a life threatening disease. It is therefore essential that we provide our children and their parents with easy access to education and information on how to manage the disease. Through events such as this, we can prepare families and greatly reduce the risk of an attack and improve overall quality of life.”

Over the last 40 years there has been a sharp increase in the global prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and economic burden associated with asthma and its prevalence is expected to increase by 50% every decade. Symptoms in children include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially early in the morning or at night. Causes and triggers include allergens, irritants, weather, exercise and infections. While there is no cure for asthma, there are effective treatments that can help control the condition, based around relieving symptoms and preventing future attacks developing.
